Booking & handling

We provide a proactive inspection and feedback process based on nearly 400 years of experience, and designed to identify potential faults and weakness before the proofing process.

Proving the firearm

The proof of each firearm is undertaken in specialist proving fixtures, designed to minimise the risk of damage to the firearm during the process.


Depending on the process required, successful test firing of an overcharged proof round two or three times assures that the firearm will function safely, and with ease during normal operation.

Proof mark engraving

Proof marks can be applied by hand stamp, pantograph, or by deep and accurate laser engraving, depending on the result be required.


Every firearm is handled and marked individually. The same approach as we take with bespoke best guns is used in our volume work.

Ensuring firearm users are safe

Gun proof is the process of measuring and testing a firearms pressure-bearing parts, such as the chambers, headspace, bores and barrels, to check they are within legal tolerances, and testing them with over-pressure proof ammunition, to check that the firearm is safe to use with regular ammunition.


This ensures its structural integrity and a safe experience for its users. On successfully withstanding the test, the firearm is marked with a proof mark to prove that the process has been undertaken by a certified Proof House.


The legislation for gun proof, specifically the Gun Barrel Proof acts lay out the statute for testing and certifying the safety of firearms in the UK. It is illegal to sell a firearm that does not bear valid proof marks.

The London Proof House is a Georgian building located in Whitechapel, and it is the historic home of British proof, inspection, ammunition control and deactivation of firearms.


The Proof House and its Proof Assistants work for the civilian, uniformed services and military sectors. All overseen by the Proof Master, the Master and Wardens, and Court of assistants, as defined by our Royal Charter granted on the 14th of March 1637 by King Charles the 1st during his reign.
