The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers is one of London’s ancient Livery Companies, established in 1637 by Royal Charter from King Charles I. Its primary purpose has always been to regulate the safety and quality of firearms, ensuring they meet
rigorous standards. To this day, the Company operates the
London Proof House, where firearms are tested under extreme pressures to verify their safety and durability. As one of only two proof houses in the UK, it plays a crucial role in enforcing British and
European proof laws, maintaining the high standards for which London gunmakers are renowned.
Beyond proofing, the Company is dedicated to preserving the heritage and craftsmanship of gunmaking. It administers the Gunmakers’ Certification Panel, which recognises exceptional talent in the trade, including through awards like the McMillan Trophy. The Gunmakers Trust also funds apprenticeships and training initiatives to ensure the next generation of skilled craftsmen can continue Britain’s gunmaking tradition. By supporting education and technical excellence, the Company helps to sustain and evolve a centuries-old industry.
As a Livery Company, the Gunmakers also participate in the civic and ceremonial life of the City of London. Members, known as Liverymen and Freemen, uphold historic traditions while contributing to the governance of the City. The Company hosts events such as the Annual Nomination Dinner, where top artisans are honored for their contributions to the trade. Through its combination of regulation, education, and tradition, the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers remains a vital institution in both the gun trade and London’s historic livery system.
The most experienced gunmakers in the UK certifying the next generation.
Awarded at the discretion of the Certification Panel for exceptional work.
The London Proof House is a Georgian building located in Whitechapel, and it is the historic home of British proof, inspection, ammunition control and deactivation of firearms.
The Proof House and its Proof Assistants work for the civilian, uniformed services and military sectors. All overseen by the Proof Master, the Master and Wardens, and Court of assistants, as defined by our Royal Charter granted on the 14th of March 1637 by King Charles the 1st during his reign.
